~~~ChordPro Version UPDATED Jan 31, 2016 CEL~~~
Another Steve Earle song. This one is from Copperhead Road where his session musicians were a little group know as the Pogues. Reading the liner notes to this magnificent album is how I learned of the Pogues who soon became a favourite of mine.
For February 17th 2016 "Anything Goes" jam, We will be singing the song in the key of F so you will not be able to play along with the video below. This is a great song though, very fun to play, well worth adding to your repetoire.
(Start with four downstrokes of [F])
I'm an A-[F]merican, boys, and I've come a long [Bb]way
I was [F]born and bred in the [C]USA
So [Dm]listen up close, I've got [Bb]something to [F]say
Boys, I'm buying this [C]round
Well it [F]took a little while, but we're in this [Bb]fight
And we [F]ain't going home 'til we've [C]done what's right
We're [Dm]gonna drink Camden Town [Bb]dry to-[F]night
If I have to spend [C]my last [F]pound
When I [F]first got to London it was pourin' down [Bb]rain
[F]Met a little girl in the [C]field canteen
[Dm]Painted her name on the [Bb]nose of my [F]plane
Six more missions I'm [C]gone
Well I [F]asked if I could stay and she said that I [Bb]might
Then the [F]warden came around yelling [C]"turn out the lights"
[Dm]Death rainin' down in the [Bb]London [F]night
We made [C]love 'til [F]dawn
CHORUS:
But when [Bb]Johnny Come Lately comes [F]marching home
With a chest full of medals and a [C]G.I. loan
They'll be [Dm]waitin' at the station in [Bb]San An-[F]tone
When Johnny comes [C]marching [F]home
My [F]P47 is a pretty good [Bb]ship
And she [F]took a round comin' 'cross the [C]channel last trip
I was [Dm]thinkin' 'bout my baby and [Bb]letting her [F]rip
Always got me through so [C]far
Well they can [F]ship me all over this great big [Bb]world
But I'll [F]never find nothing like my [C]North End girl
I'm [Dm]taking her home with me [Bb]one day, [F]sir,
Soon as we [C]win this [F]war
CHORUS:
But when [Bb]Johnny Come Lately comes [F]marching home
With a chest full of medals and a [C]G.I. loan
They'll be [Dm]waitin' at the station in [Bb]San An-[F]tone
When Johnny comes [C]marching [F]home
Now [F]my granddaddy sang me this [Bb]song
[F]Told me about London when the [C]blitz was on
[Dm]How he married Grandma and brought her [Bb]back [F]home,
A hero throughout his [C]land
Now I'm [F]standin' on a runway in [Bb]San Diego
A [F]couple purple hearts and I [C]move a little slow
There's [Dm]nobody here, maybe [Bb]nobody [F]knows
About a place called [C]Viet-[F]nam
CHORUS:
But when [Bb]Johnny Come Lately comes [F]marching home
With a chest full of medals and a [C]G.I. loan
They'll be [Dm]waitin' at the station in [Bb]San An-[F]tone
When Johnny comes [C]marching [F]home
But when [Bb]Johnny Come Lately comes [F]marching home
With a chest full of medals and a [C]G.I. loan
They'll be [Dm]waitin' at the station in [Bb]San An-[F]tone
When Johnny comes [C]marching [F]home
